I am going to keep this one straight forward cause frankly it makes my skin errk.
De Klerk had an interview at a summit of Nobel laureates in Chicago last week where he was asked if he agreed that apartheid was a moral fuck up. He answered: ” In as much as it trampled human rights it was, and remains, morally indefensible.”
But then he said (on the homeland system): “But the concept of giving, as the Czechs have it now, and the Slovaks have it, of saying that ethnic unity with one culture with one language [everyone] can be happy and can fulfil their democratic aspirations in an own state, that is not repugnant.”
South Africans have already called for him to retract and apologise for his statements. I am not sure what this will help with as the man has already let us know what he thinks, and that is not going to change.
We all know that the only reason apartheid ever came to a stop is because the country was broke due to all the sanctions, not that anyone had real plans to stop…
I’m okay with his apology hey…Thanks…
